What Are High Yield Stocks?

A high yield stock provides a dividend that’s above the associated benchmark. A commonly used benchmark is the 10-year US Treasury note, though not all analysts will use the same comparison. Dividends are paid out regularly to investors, providing steady returns on this type of investment. The dividend yield is determined by dividing the company’s annual dividend by the stock’s share price.

When a stock produces a high dividend yield, it is typically because it was undervalued and offers a low price. High yield stocks perform better than no yield or low yield stocks in bear markets.
